ProAction needs good ideas

By Chris Williams. Published: 30th Jun 2003, 17:06:09.

Swamped in software, seeking direction

"Nice open question for you", writes APDL/ProAction's David Bradforth. "What needs doing to our software?" ProAction, having soaked up Clares' software back catalogue last year, has called on users this week to suggest improvements and ideas for their range of software.

ProAction's software hoarde now includes Compo, WimpBasic, Sleuth, Desktop Repton. ProAction later told us that work is already underway on WimpBasic 2, Slueth 4, Typestudio 2 and Recycler Plus.

Acorn Publisher editor John Cartmell suggested that the software developers get on the scene to talk to users offering feature ideas.

"If users really believe they are being listened to and results will be available short-term they will go out of their way to make suggestions - and later to test and report (& advertise!) new versions", John added.

We're certain that every software developer out there has always looked forward to receiving feature suggestions from users, but it's good to see ProAction being so, erm, proactive about it. What with such an extensive software catalogue now, we're not surprised ProAction are turning to users to give them defined direction. Having absorbed Clares' all star cast of application titles, ProAction's team may well have drowned in material whilst trying to drive the lot through a much needed redevelopment'n'release cycle.

Over to you.

How about actually delivering the promised Superior Collection upgrade, that actually made more than 10% of the software on it useful on StrongARM/RO4 RiscPCs? I must have been waiting two years now.

Oh, and make EasyC++ not awful, not just turn the cache off to make it work on StrongARMs, and make it generate 32bit code and perhaps modules, so people have an alternative to Castle's (rather expensive, but I suppose you get what you pay for) compilers.

Fix the bugs in Type Studio.

The version I bought has as many bugs as the Beebug original, despite claims that it was being updated and my submitting various bug reports as a (paying) Beta Tester.

Still, I've got AW2 now so not such an issue.

I used GCC, no problems, don't see the point much in Easy C with that around. The Vigil debugger looks good though.

I would like to see !Studio24+ (the music package) back on the scene. It is (as far as I know) the only package that could control external equipment by sync/midi time output. My A310 is getting past it...

What is the Vigil debugger? I've seen very little of it, but it looked like just a WIMP app that kept track of the values of stored variables in your app (so no stepping though code, or anything really useful.)

I can't really find any real information on it.

Is GDB included in the GCC port? If so, somebody should get their act together, and port DDD using Chocky's X library. :)

Nope, gdb isn't part of the gcc port.

"Get currying". GDB is quite distinct from GCC, yes.

That's a shame.

Why? -- Ian Hawkins (g0tai)

Because GDB is good, and not available for RISC OS?

 is a RISC OS Userthegman on 1/7/03 2:41PM [ Reply | Report ]

gdb is "adequate". It's certainly not good. However, it's probably the only debugger that has a half decent chance of being ported to RO.

I'd also have to agree with the fetishist that existing software under ADPLs wing really should be made 32-bit compliant without worrying about new stuff.

heds: GDB isn't that great, no. But combined with DDD is can be rather lovely.

How about texture map games like Appocolypse and possibly 640 x 480 res it for Iyonix machines. If Iyonix owners are going to buy any games/software for the second time they need something extra. I know it is asking a lot but hey, there was a time when 'industry comparable' software wasn't being produced as 'new modern hardware' wasn't being produced ? ? ? We need to push forward our software.

Keep up the good work.

Regards Greg.
