I still find it amusing that a piece of software whose *main purpose* measured by *how people use it* is to download copyrighted works without paying, is itself commercial software. Of course. I feel that many people prefer GUIs to click on, rather than command line mumbo jumbo so a lot of people will just cough up Just as long as they don't "update" the protocol or something. Don't some folks still use the networks in the way they were (I hope) intending - to give people the chance to try before they buy - I've bought dozens of CDs based on samples through P2P - what does the record industry have to fear. Yeah, I still use it to get stuff to see if I want to buy the albums. I also use it to get stuff that you can't get anymore, or stuff I've got on Vinyl. The RIAA and the BPI have really missed the point about file sharing. It is a way of sreading the word about music and encouraging people to buy proper copies of what they find. In my opinion, MP3 files playing of a hard drive are rubbish compared to listening to a professionally produced CD. Likewise burning music CDs that you have commiled yourself is too much like hard work. However, the great advantage of systems like Gnutella, which is at the heart of !CocoGnut is finding obscure tracks that are simply not available anymore. For instance, it took me ten years to finallt track down and buy a copy of "Die Young" by Black Sabbath on vinyl. However, when I went looking for an MP3 of it, it was a doddle, I found it in a matter of minutes. Although the software appears to be hamstrung by the fact that it requires Justin Fletcher's EasySocket software, which is not 32bit compatable, so will not work on Iyonix PCs. -- Keep Flying JWCR on 20/9/03 1:53PM [ Reply | Permalink | Report ]

john: they can't go "updating the standard", because it's open.
