ProAction pumps life into AudioWorks By Chris Williams. Published: 20th Sep 2003, 18:55:33. Computer Concepts' audio editing software re-released As part of their on going crusade to rescue legacy software, APDL/ProAction have this week taken over AudioWorks from its previous owner, Computer Concepts. AudioWorks is described by ProAction as a "complete suite of sound editing functions in one easy to use, low cost, application" and supports Amiga IFF, Armadeus, DataVox, Microsoft Wave, Creative Voice file, Acorn Replay Movies, Digital Symphony, EMR Sound Synth and other audio file types. It can also sample from suitable sound cards and includes a utility to attach sounds to desktop events. For AudioWorks users, we recommend this sound for your desktop startup. Ovation 1.50 SE, an 'entry level' DTP package, is also now available on CD in 26/32bit neutral form with the usual bundle of tutorials, fonts and clipart. Some of its limitations are... uh... quite limiting for modern sound manipulation. Or is this likely to be a case of merely rebundling old software ? AudioWorks was good for its time, but it's quite outdated now. Some of these might be addressed in versions of the software since the one I have (1.47 Apr 15 1994). It is unfortunate, but I find that ProSound and StudioSound are too unreliable for serious use and often crash on me with no warning. As the author states on his page, there is no support offered for these products at all. It is a shame that they're not still being developed. jonix on 21/9/03 4:34PM [ Reply | Report ] Unstable? News to me. I've been using ProSound for years without issue. Maybe it's the soundcard driver you're using? Most stuff I did was on Eagle or Lark. Nice to see some development in the sound of things. It's very annoying having to use PC every time I want to do some sound work. Is it possible to write drivers for PC sound cards and shove them into an Iyonix (or a RPC with the new PCI adapter)? The current chipsets (even the new Iyonix ones) are pretty limited for professional use. It would be great to be able to get a 24-bit card (ie LynxTwo, SB Audigy) for a RO machine - the new generation sound cards are the standard these days. timephoenix on 22/9/03 10:26AM [ Reply | Report ] gerph : from what I can gather from talking to Dave Bradforth, it doesn't look like they have a source release, so any fixes will purely be (as with EasyC++) hacks. I think there is more chance with Rhapsody 4 than AudioWorks of adding Ogg support and the other things you've mentioned. Pity, but there you go. It is a great app, but must be updated for modern file formats 24/32 bits audio and must be able to cope with large CD or better quality samples at a reasonable speed. Multitrack editing (more than 2) and time stretching would also be very welcome.
