Promising good new things From the first of October, 'Stuart Tyrrell Developments' will become the trading name of 'Advantage Six' in a bid to differentiate the RISC OS side of their business from STD's general electronic design business. STD's move, announced this weekend, is hoped to illustrate that while they are comfortably expanding and taking on new staff, STD will still remaining committed to RISC OS end users. STD sell various hardware products for RISC OS users, from PS2 mouse converters to Simtec powered USB solutions. Although 'Advantage Six' sounds like an upmarket, pastel wallpapered south London design agency, the name is definitely a world apart from 'STD', which we imagine wouldn't go down well in the business to business relationships that STD would like to foster. RISC OS end users will still find STD at the usual addresses and telephone numbers. "Our ethos is to design, commission and implement 'ground up' solutions - for example, development of NET100 included a full, clean stack", Stuart Tyrrell confidently explained in his company's press release. "As the design and associated code is not taken from public source or owned by others outside the project, this work may be sublicenced elsewhere with a corresponding reduction in development costs for RISC OS implementations. "We have a number of mass-market devices in development which may benefit the RISC OS marketplace in a similar manner." We, of course, look forward to closely following any new developments Advantage Six bring to our platform. Links STD website Could this be the future online home of Advantage6? The only problem I ever had with that name was that it reminded me of a defunct turntable manufacturer also called STD (Strathclyde Transmission Developments IIRC). STD is commonly the anacronymn for two things. Standard Trunk Dialing (telecom) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. I think Stuart is doing the correct thing in changing the name. As for element14, it is highly appropriate since element14 is silicon. In addition web names are becoming harder to define. eg I considered a few before "armbase" and these did not exist, however a trawl through the companies-house registered companies showed a couple of my choices to be failed companies. Therefore it was not prudent to call my SW offsahoot that name. Regards Bob from Armbase nijinsky on 29/9/03 11:02AM [ Reply | Report ] I am well awear that that STD is the TLA for a number of things including the 2 you mention Bob, but neither of them are "Company" names and I think we are all mature enough not to find the coincidence confusing (or ammusing). I think we are all also awear that element 14 is silicon and that it was therefore at the time probably thought of as sutibley trendy and vagley relivent enough to be "clever". I will happily admit that I have no idea where Advantage Six comes from?. Has it a similar root to such phrases as Catch 22 or Alterative 3?. -- Victor Shears, Maidstone vshears on 29/9/03 12:51PM [ Reply | Report ] STD was only STD because the D fitted into a logo better than anything else The real problem is convincing anyone other than the intellectually superior RISC OS people that it has to be referred to officically as "Stuart Tyrrell Developments". I get "STD Developments" (Macro), "ST Developments" (AU), "S Tyrrell Development" (banks), and all the variations of "Tyrrell". Hopeless. We went through hundreds of names for the Ltd company (it's amazing what people register), with the proviso that it must be generic and must have domains available. A contender was "Further Solutions", until it becomes "Further Solutions Limited". "Black Moon" was good - cheap logos, easy photography, but gone. Advantage Six doesn't mean anything and doesn't have any associations, beyond the positive aspect of the word "advantage" (especially in the education arena). It was going to be "Advantage Seven", 7 being traditionally a lucky number in some cultures (and this actually came from a 3-sevens bottle opener I bought in HK), but we decided "seven" was too long a word, one was gone, ten sounded even more silly, and I'm sure we can use dice and lists of advantages in adverts somewhere. I suppose if I'd thought of Element 14, we might have chosen a different second word, but we didn't, so we didn't. I'm sorry to disappoint if there's no clever (or tacky?) meaning behind the name associations - it's just positive sounding, has a nice logo idea and makes for simple advertising. stdevel on 29/9/03 2:53PM [ Reply | Report ] Oh, and don't forget I'm not changing the name.... Stuart Tyrrell Developments continues - but I was not going to register Stuart Tyrrell Developments Ltd.
