Midlands 2003 event cancelled - official

By Chris Williams. Published: 30th Sep 2003, 03:53:12.

Don't cry for me, Birmingham

The ARM Club have confirmed that the Midlands show is officially cancelled following the fire that wiped out the majority of the show's venue. The ARM Club organised event was due to be held at the National Motorcycle museum this coming November.

We're told exhibitors will have their deposits refunded. The cancellation of the show may throw the release timings of various future RISC OS products and services in disarray as the Midlands show is the last major show of the year. We may see a rash of updates and releases concentrated on the October South East show, or perhaps developers may enjoy the extra breathing space and move releases to coincide with the early 2004 shows.

"Since the fire we've spent a fortnight searching hard to find alternative venues in the area, with the aid of local events planners, but unfortunately have found nothing suitable and available", Toby Smith, ARM Club Chairman explained yesterday in an email to drobe.co.uk.

"Cancellation is not something we've taken lightly, and we appreciate the disappointment to visitors and exhibitors alike. We'll miss getting to meet many of the usual faces too."

The ARM Club basically needs 400sqm of space in the Birmingham area with good transportation links, reasonable hiring rates and lots of mains power points - if you have any bright ideas for a possible last minute venue, drop them an email as soon as possible with as many details as you can manage.

The ARM Club are planning a 2004 show as the museum should be restored in time to act as the event's venue.

<ahem> Something that jumps to mind about Birmingham is the NEC? Surely that's got 400sqm! Perhaps it is a little too expensive though but if it's in the NEC there might be extra visitors from intruiged passers by. -- Smiler - :D Alex Melhuish

The NEC probably costs way too much to rent for the day. :(

What about a midlands university?

They hold conferences/shows all the time and also have facilities for lectures.

Anyone considered Telford? It's convenient on the M54 off the M6 and can be got too easily for anyone in Wales. There is a big Sports Centre, which hosts the UK Championships and many PC based trade shows.

As a guide to those of us who have a poor sense of spacial awareness, exactly how big is 400sqM in relations Rugby pitches? -- Keep Flying

20 metres x 20 metres, oddly enough. Or around 65 feet square.

Doubt you'd be able to host a show at a uni at this time of year when it's full of students.

Sad but hardly suprising.

Birmingham university is large, eager for money, handy for the train, stuffed full of power outlets, has at least some spare parking facilities, especially at the weekend... and is packed full of students, as of last week. I suppose it might be possible, but I guess those in charge wouldn't risk it at this time of year. During the summer it might've been different.

According to <a href="[link]">Some random website</a>, the playing area (between the two goals and two touch-lines) of a rugby pitch is not more than 100 by 70 meters, or a maximum of 7000 meters square. 400m^2 is tiny in comparison - the space required is a little under one 18th of a full size rugby pitch.

Would it not be possible to postpone the show until, say, mid-January?

January has usually been avoided because at least some RISC OS companies will also be attending the BETT show (which is nearly a full week, IIRC).
