Grapevine 'security update' issued

Oh look, SSL. Fancy that.
R-Comp have issued a 'security update' for Grapevine, their online instant messaging application. Registered users will have already received the "significant" update and if anyone thinks they've been left out, they should drop R-Comp an email. Grapevine includes an MSN Messenger network client and an IRC client.

"This is an important new version, containing a significant 'security update' that moves users to a much more secure and compatible SSL-based login procedure", R-Comp explain in their announcement. "Although this may sound minor, it is important that users move to 1.15 quickly as this is likely to become mandatory very soon."

R-Comp insisted to us that the update is purely a 'security update' where adding SSL support is a 'security update'.

It's painfully obvious though that the update is to hopefully allow Grapevine to connect to the MSN Messenger network. The MSN Messenger network is due to change from mid-October when Microsoft will block what they deem to be unauthorised and unlicensed clients. Part of the change over includes the necessity to use SSL to log into the MSN network. It would be therefore wise for R-Comp to keep quiet that they're going to brute force their client onto the MSN network.

Fingers crossed, eh?

Why would R-Comp want to hide something so poorly and so obvious? Their moving towards a M$ ideal; tell them it's a security update so they don't get worried. It's rediculous!

Since it isn't yet Oct 15th, any change made to secure logins only gaurantees increased security. It will remain to be seen if it continues to work and give other benefits. That is why it is a security update.

And now it's passed the 15th and the bloody thing doesn't work. Their product is now 50% totally useless. Great.
