Paying a premium for those historical bytes
Domesday systemA BBC Acorn Domesday system has been sold for just under five hundred pounds on ebay, the online auction site.

"This is possibly one of the hardest Acorn machines to find. One of these machines is actually on display in the Science Museum. Its importance cannot be understated", explains the webpage for the rare 8 bit machine's auction.

"From a vintage computing point of view, this item was an amazing piece of equipment for the time. One of the first true Multimedia machines. More importantly though is its social relevence".

Domesday systems are very rare yet the data they contain is particularly precious and work is underway to preserve the information. Domesday systems use laser discs for storing the historical multimedia archive and an Acorn Master system to power it all. While RiscPCs and other Acorn era kit are still relatively cheap, it's touching that bit of real Acorn history is, in a way, at the centre of the historical data preservation scene.

Wow, I remember having one of these systems, complete, gathering dust on my desk at work about 1990 (All our machines were Acorns). It was good fun flicking through the vast volumes of information on it when it was going, happy days...
