| What's going down on Saturday - Select ROMs? Cino? Networked VRPC-SE? |

The South East show is upon us again and excitingly, it appears it's going to play host to the launch of a few new eye opening RISC OS products. Last year's event saw the unveiling of the Iyonix so maybe we're seeing the start of a new trend. Guildford, UK is the place to be this Saturday if you're a RISC OS user.
While our spies are silently deploying themselves in the rafters and cupboards of show hall as we speak, with flasks of coffee, chicken tikka sandwiches and an eagle eye at the ready, we'd love to hear from you if you plan to attend the show and especially the show theatres.
Pre-show news
RISCOS Ltd. have told us that they "may be showing the first version of the new Select in ROM, and taking advance orders".
"We won't be taking deposits, but at present the ROM version will be strictly limited to 150 copies. The price will be £140 per set of ROMs for new purchasers with a sliding scale of discount for subscribers to the Select scheme", added RISCOS Ltd.'s Paul Middleton. RISCOS Ltd. are exhibiting at the show.
VirtualAcorn, exhibiting, say they will have a network aware version of VirtualRiscPC-SE at the show. Exisitng users will get a free upgrade.
"The new networking pack has been tested with all the current RISC OS browsers, and has been developed with the help of both Rcomp and OreganoUK Ltd. Users can now browse the web and connect their VirtualAcorns to their real RISC OS machines using Access", VA's Aaron Timbrell told us.
"The network aware VirtualRPC-SE will also be supplied with full versions of SiteWriter and WebFX3D and a number of network related applications and utilities."
Photodesk Ltd. have announced that their CameraDesk software is now 32bit compatible. CameraDesk was launched earlier in the year at the Wakefield show and allows digital camera users to transfer files to suitable RISC OS machines using USB. Photodesk are also giving away a free copy of their image editing package Photodesk with every digital camera sold at the show. Photodesk Ltd. will be exhibiting at the show.
Exhibitors R-Comp have coincided an update to WebsterXL with the show - the new version includes the ability to save complete page with images, scripts and stylesheets, new security configuration and they've also set drobe.co.uk as the browser's default homepage. We're very flattered.
R-Comp also have a genealogy project planned and describe it as "a powerful tool to be used alongside more traditional 'family tree' products". Have a chat with the dudes at R-Comp if you're interested.
Artworks 2.10 will be on show, on MW Software's stand at the show. We're also expecting an announcement about MW Software's universal printing system too.
Aemulor.com will be at the show "demonstrating the 26-bit filing system support in a pre-release version of Aemulor Pro". They also have a new Iyonix based project, Cino, to show off - more details on that when we get them.
Castle also have a stand and have another Iyonix special offer which may tempt you. Iyonixes bought from now until February 2004 will have a 19" Iiyama bundled for free.
Cocognut author Marc Warne will be sharing a stand with IC Software. Marc tells us that he'll have a 32bit compatible version of file sharing app Cocognut to demonstrate and a free coconut for each of the first ten Cocognut customers. We kid you not.
IC Software will also be selling ProCAD and WebWonder as well as taking orders for printed copies of the Artworks 2 manual.
The Unix Porting Project will be out in force selling subscriptions, CDs of ports and Debian ARM Linux CDs - plus an Iyonix Linux installation service if you book early.
Acorn Publisher, respected dead tree based rival publication, will also be present with the latest issue of their magazine for graphics, dtp & web design. Acorn Publisher will also have special offers on back issues and bundles of the magazine for those who want to complete a favourite series of articles. Also, AP editor John Cartmell will be giving away a free gift to everyone who attends his show theatre.
Brian Jaques will be manning a stand with his Web Writing CD. Brian described his CD as a "zero-entry guide to the techniques of HTML, Style Sheets, and JavaScript. The CD content explains, demonstrates and gives exercises so you can get at the basics of these techniques".
A show wouldn't be a show without CJE Micro, who have recently started pushing wireless ethernet for RISC OS and new Canon printer drivers.
Finally, no RISC OS show is complete without the Fortran Friends being present - they've told us all their software is now RISC OS 3 to 5 compatible and that they'll have "some results of our research into the uses of polyhedra in bell ringing; thus nicely connecting our two latest enthusiasms".

The show is being organised by SASAUG with Fillin Ltd. doing spiffy technical stuff in the background.
"An electronic guide is produced for visitors, running on several monitors at the event, and updated as required, and a general plan is printed on each ticket", Phil of Fillin decided to tell us earlier today while helpfully reminding us of copyright law and mistaking us to be a commercial website.

I hope there is an upgrade path for virtual A5000 that's cheaper than the upgrade to Virtual RPC. VA5000 with network would suit my needs perfectly.

I think that the show sould have been for 2 days, as apposed to one, due to me working Saturdays and not Sundays |

The best part of the show was definatley Cino. On first impressions it looked like they'd employed a gremlin in the back of their monitor to draw the images and string them together. On closer examination and with a bit of eaves-dropping it seemed a tad more impressive. Apparently 5 weeks work, interesting stuff. Just add another 5 more weeks and we'll be laughing.  Ok, maybe not.
The worst part of the show was probably the lack of internet connection in the venue. I wanted to see Grapevine working, but unfortunatley it was not to be. Disappointing really considering so many products are based around the net these days. Otherwise though the venue was top dollar. It was an easy 10/15 minute walk from the station, just enough time to conclude that Guilford is a bit, just a bit of a dump. No offense intended, although someone (a PC bashing friend) said to me it was quite an appropriate place for a RO show.
The funniest part of the show was the amount of beardness. Tonnes of beardige - total respect. Got to hand it to the women.
The most annoying part of the show was the lack of attenders. I'm assuming that the Iyonix is so great that people didn't want to leave their computer desks. I'm hoping that enough people came to cover the costs for the event. :S
The sexiest thing of the show. Well thats just got to be Chocky on the UPP stand, looking more like an entry to blind date than an exhibitor.
