Cino aims for Q2 2004

By Chris Williams. Published: 27th Oct 2003, 14:52:35.

DVD player going for the long haul, PCI sound getting there

Further details of a more technical nature on Cino, the recently pre-announced DVD player software for the Iyonix, have been posted this week on the software's website. The post, written by programmer Adrian Lees, explains the various pitfalls the team have encountered. He also states, "Cino was a project waiting to happen since October of last year when Castle's pre-production Iyonix included a DVD-ROM drive - personally I suspect this may have been a deliberate ploy on their part - but we only started working seriously mid-September, ie. about 6 weeks ago."

The Cino team have also specifically pointed out to us that they have their PCI sound card driver working but admittedly not finished. They currently have a driver for the SoundBlaster Live! and SoundBlaster Audigy PCI sound cards and it's hoped that the driver will be available separately.

"We're now working on a suitable API to allow easy future extension of the RISC OS sound system (including APIs for developers and games to use to obtain surround sound etc.)", Neil Spellings of the Cino gang explained to us on Sunday.

On the subject of when we can expect Cino to be finished, Neil showed that Cino is another big, fairly long term project akin to their Aemulor product. He stated that, "there is still a lot to be done, but I'd hope to have a releasable product at Wakefield next year."

When we suggested that users may fear Cino will turn into another Cineroma case, Neil added, "We've shown !Cino exists and works at the South East show - now it's just a case of fine tuning all the various stages to increase the frame rate and implementing the stuff we skipped to get something to show at the show.

"I suspect a demo or beta will be available by the end of the year. We may actually do the DVDFS first, and release that, as it may be of use to more people than the video player."

The DVDFS being implemented first is a good idea, then get the trickier stuff later.

Note that DVDFS is not necessary for playing DVDs - after all, a simple standalone DVD player can't be expected to understand all the complexity of UDF, Joliet and ISO9660. Therefore, the DVD standard was done in a way where only the simplest interpretation of the data is enough to play a DVD.

But implementing DVDFS first is still a good idea, because I think that sensible data CD/DVD handling is a much bigger problem for IYONIX users than not being able to play DVDs!

Now all we will need is new, powerfull apps to fill those DVDs! ;)

Well DVDFS first seems a logical step, after all its no good having a DVD playing program if it can't read the filesystem ;)

(If I understand that that is the way it works correctly)

andypoole:

Cino currently plays CDs but the underlying DVDFS cant yet understand a complete UDF-format DVDROM.

To demo at the show, we tought Cino enough about the format to obtain a list of VOBs and where they reside on the disc - Cino then plays from the disc without any knowledge of the underlying filing system (its all just sectors afterall...)

I don't folow the logic that the pre-production Iyonix with a DVD-Rom drive led to Cino being developed as RiscPCs have had a non-fuctioning DVD drive for yonks.

not many RiscPCs overall, and RiscPCs can't play DVD videos anyway, too slow.

Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers.
