How to tart up an Iyonix case

Neon lights to the rescue on a Friday night

One of the major let downs of the Castle Iyonix, expressed purely by the general userbase, was the choice of casing. The Iyonix's case, for some people, is so generic, it made cardboard look more exciting than a one time Acorn executive releasing his pent up fury on a PC at that Acorn World show with a hammer and hack saw.

Case modifications were once upon a time all the rage. Heaven forbid if they still are, we suspect the fashion died out when adventurous geeks tried adding aquariums to their machines. Splish, splash, smell of burning PCB? Maybe not. Cue Iyonix.

While there's no tropical fish and silicon chips in sight here, there is one glowing souped up Iyonix case, crafted from the loving hands (or merely moisturised) of Neil Spellings. He of the Cino team has put together an online gallery of how he created his neon and perspex effort. All he needs now is a glow in the dark keyboard and possible a gold star for his achievement.

Any other ideas for an Iyonix case redesign welcome.

Most casemods are naff cheesefests. This case actually looks nice, though!

I don't believe it...after all those weeks of coding, people are more interested in the case!

Cool! I've neatened up the innards of my machine by replacing the standard IDE cable with two copper-effect shielded ones. Shame I can't see them...

I did have more "glowing stuff" but there wasnt physically enough space left to mount it anywhere. Would of run the risk of coming a cheesefest too I guess!

Adrian - didnt I mention the only point of having the DVD software on show was to get people looking at the case?? ;-)

Crazy but deeply cool. And what an ace marketing move by Neil. I hope castle are taking note. O.K. It WOULD add to the cost but when you have to spend so much anyway what's a few quid more ?

There is quite a choice of nice PC Cases. the local PC shop stocks a black one (Leo) with a front panel that glows violet when the power is on. (My brother's mico is now rehoused and so is my PC, bit of a waste since i never use it though)

The ATX format certainly allows for a wealth of options. Although a custom-case is probably beyond the market's means nowadays, I'm sure a case manufacturer could be reasonably easily convinced to supply an existing mould in an exotic pantone. I always thought phoebe would have been cooler still in bright acorn green.

They can be bought in the UK from Simply Computers www.simply.co.uk - produce code 49337

The round and neon hard drive leads are also Akasa, as are the fans. The memory is Corsair, HD - Maxtor, and DVD - Sony.

russebay: I think there is physically space for a podule (although I dont have the riser card to check this) although the case doesnt have anywhere to attach the backplate to, just a large hole!
