We're ready for Wakefield 2004, says WROCC

Two day event confirmed
Wakefield2004 motifThe WROCC has confirmed to drobe.co.uk this morning that there will be a Wakefield 2004 event, with plans being "well underway for the event". The announcement is considerably more upbeat than Chris Hughes' initial fears after last year's event.

Next year's RISC OS show will, you'll be pleased to know, be a two day event held on the 15th and 16th of May 2004. The venue will be, as always, the Thornes Park Athletics Stadium. Advance tickets will be available from March at 6 quid a head, otherwise it's 7 quid a head on the day for Saturday and 6 quid a head on the day for Sunday. Under 5's are free.

A train station minibus, sponsored by the lads at APDL and Virtual Acorn, will be running, as will the show theatre and charity stall. The WROCC are also planning another prize draw.

According to the WROCC's show co-ordinator, Chris Hughes, the event will be sponsored by APDL, FinnyBank, Spelling Computer Services, Stuart Tyrrell Developments and Virtual Acorn, with support from the RISC OS press.

The Wakefield show has always been a pillar of the RISC OS annual calendar with many developers pivoting releases around the show weekend. We're pleased to see that the WROCC have been able to engineer a 2004 event.

I'm glad to see that it will still be at Thornes Park. If the weather is fine it isn't a bad walk from the railway station; the minibus will add convenience but isn't vital.

The "as always" isn't quite correct - the first one was at the Cedar Court Hotel and a minibus would be very important for anyone not able to go by car.

I'll buy you a drink and, if you go, give it to you but, if not, I'll give it to fylfot.

The show
The news that Wakefield 2004 is happening is fab. Last year, I almost got divorced when my wife arranged a surprise party for a relative on the same date. This year's dates are now in HER diary !

Heh, fyl'll have to have it then. On the 15th I'm out and about ringing, and on the 16th I'll be on my way back to uni again :(

martin and andypoole:

I certainly be most grateful fot a drink. You'll have to bring it all the way to my stand, however. It's thirsty work!

Look forward to seeing at least one of you there. :)

Will it be worth the trip up from Cambridge for us, I wonder? To be honest, for the past three years we've treated it as a time to meet people, and go to the pub, not to talk to RISC OS people.

Cool, I might actually be able to go to this one as I'm booked to fly to the UK a couple of days before the show.

For your information: Advance tickets are available from March, which I initially missed out. Oops.

Oh no! I will miss it. I am getting married that weekend. I wonder if the missus will mind going there the day after on sunday....

Why not ask for a special theatre presonation?
You could go around the stalls asking for wedding gifts. :D

I'm really pleased that Wakefiled is back to two days.
I thought they were struggling to make it financially viable over one day - how have they managed to afford two days this year? Is it purely going to be covered on the (justifiable) increase in entrance price?

Having it on one day does not make it half as cheap. If it's over two days the potential audience has two bites of the cherry to fit it into their schedule.
What's more, now that that Castle own RISC OS and there's xscale machines - actually in people's hands - that run all your old favourites much faster will soon and run things that have never been seen on ROS before - like DVD Players, etc., well, there's just more reason for people to attend.

In reply to boroboy:
The previous one-day show was largely due to a (narrow) majority of exhibitors preferring a one-day show. That balance has presumably now shifted back slightly, in addition to which a lot of visitors seemingly asked for a two day show too.

As JessFranco says, I think all the progress that has been made in terms of X-Scale compatibility should help to cheer up the market and give the show a better chance at success.

Having said that, I don't see Castle listed (yet?) amongst the show sponsors, which is a little worrying as it's so unusual.
