Did someone say "free Iyonix"?

By Chris Williams. Published: 28th Jan 2004, 01:37:11.

Gimme gimme gimme

As part of the Iyonix launch, hardware developer Castle decided that giving a machine away for free every so often to a randomly picked user would be a great way to get some publicity. One machine was given away prior to the launch in November 2002 and another was handed over last November on the XScale powered computer's anniversary.

And behold, there's another Iyonix prize draw, scheduled for December 2004 and according to their website, "the next draw will be held on the 1st of December 2004." Simply fill in some (depending on your definition of 'some') personal details to enter the prize draw to win Castle's flagship computer.

We note that there's no privacy policy in sight and Castle promise to "keep you informed about the Iyonix". So perhaps Castle aren't expecting anyone to whinge about oh, trivial matters like data protection and privacy when they're being generous enough to give away a free Iyonix.

Congratulations to the eagle eyed reader who spotted this year's prize draw; you beat Castle to their own publicity. Instead of keeping the news to yourself to ensure that few fellow users enter and you therefore stand a greater chance of winning the Iyonix, you chose to tell us about it and thus inform the thousands of people who frequent drobe.co.uk of the prize draw.

That's why we thought we wouldn't mention your name, James. Oops.

Well, I think it would be nice if someone who would like an Iyonix but can't justify the price won it. I shan't be entering myself since I already have an Iyonix. Noe if it were for an Iyonic laptop, that would be different.

Yuh, in the 'Current Machines' section of the form, there isn't even an 'Iyonix' entry ;)

Except that this 'news' was known at the time of the second prize draw results. See Revin Kevin's comment here: [link]

Does this mean there won't be an Iyonix II this year? :O

Hmmm. This form appears to be the original one - it talks about one giveaway before the launch and one a year after. Are we sure this is a new draw, or is the old one still hanging around?

Quoting from the bottom of the form: '1st draw for the IYONIX PC was one week before launch. 2nd draw was held on the first anniversary of the launch. The next draw will be held on the 1st of December 2004. '

*decides not to enter because he'd make a rather bad and un-tasteful sarcastic comment if he won... kinda like this one :)*

What's with the Acorn logo? Are Castle ready to exploit their 'MG'/Bugatti/Maserati/Norton/Triumph' marketing opportunity?

Well, considering that the first generally available Iyonixes were sold at the much lamented National Motorcycle Museum....

Ah - it was the "thanks for entering" page that hadn't been altered IIRC. But I hadn't rechecked the entry form page enough :-)

The draw is just far enough in the future for the winner to have forgotten that they entered for it in the first place, thus getting a nice surprise. A nice touch, although possibly not a supreme act of promotion on Castle's part.

The site is outdated as the link is for the old Castle site and no longer works. Perhaps the date is dynamic and has just 'rolled over' to 2004. :frown:

guestx: Of course if they forget they entered then they might end up buying an Iyonix, and then be stuck with two of them. Not that that's a particularly bad situation, of course :)

ooh free iyonix...again

If in the meantime you have already bought and paid for an IyonixPC, does this mean that Castle will refund what you paid? If so, an extra £1299 just before Christmas would be very nice.

Ooh can I win the prize? After all my current computer is about 10 years old now ;-)

They should have had space for a tie breaker. I once knew a bloke that won a prize in a magazine- something electronic, I forgot exactly what. The questions was, 'If you could only takeone thing to a desert island, what would it be'?

He scrawled like a child, 'I'd take a spoon, cos I like pudding'.

This won.
