New RISC OS ownership claim may derail ROOL RiscPC ROM release RISCOS Ltd, the developers of RISC OS 4 and 6, may attempt to block RISC OS Open Ltd from releasing a RiscPC-compatible ROM built from the RISC OS 5 Shared Source project, drobe.co.uk has learned. 131 comments, latest by Stoppers on 20/5/09 5:58PM. Tanks a lot! Double USB toy driver joy RISC OS USB guru Dave Higton has released drivers for two remote-controlled gadgets: an 'executive mayhem' tank and a mini car. Get ready to order your armoured, missile-firing kit into position and destroy your office colleagues, or instead swap your computer's circuits for your own race track with a remote-controlled banger. The source code is available and the software should work on Simtec and Castle USB stacks. 4 comments, latest by davehigton on 4/9/09 2:32PM. Published: 3 Sep 2009
A guide to overclocking Kinetic and StrongARM CPU cards Charlie Lane has compiled a package of notes and photos on overclocking various StrongARM processer cards, including Castle Kinetics, for RiscPCs. Overclocking is the process of ramping up the digital timing signals of the computer to force the processor to work faster. Charlie told us: "I thought it would be fun to investigate the possibilities of speeding up my Kinetic RiscPC - only to find suitable information on Kinetic cards was rather hard to come by so I set about working it out for myself." Note: Follow the instructions entirely at your own risk. 9 comments, latest by rjek on 20/1/09 4:23PM. Published: 6 Jan 2009
RISC OS 5 pictured running on ARM Cortex-A8 kit Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers. 75 comments, latest by rjek on 30/4/09 3:15PM. Community-produced RISC OS 5.14 in final testing A RISC OS 5 ROM image produced from RISC OS Open's shared source project and code contributed by volunteer programmers has been submitted to Castle for testing. Once it has passed a round of QA, Castle, aka Iyonix Ltd, is expected to ship the new ROM image to end users. A copy of the ROM image, which is suitable for XScale-powered Iyonix computers, is available for download now for anyone crazy enough to test it on their hardware. ROOL's Steve Revill said: "This ROM build includes a snapshot of all the latest updates and submissions to the shared source project from the community." 14 comments, latest by jlavallin on 14/12/08 10:36AM. South West 2009 show report Martin Hansen describes his time as both a punter and an exhibitor at this year's annual RISC OS event held in the south west of the UK. While there were no major announcements ahead of the show, the otherwise friendly and mildly busy atmosphere was coloured by Friday's tragic loss of Paul Vigay. 3 comments, latest by mosschoppers on 1/3/09 8:15PM. The leaked ROL licence is the dullest thing you will ever read Having had the authenticity of an anonymously leaked partial copy of RISCOS Ltd's licence to develop and distribute RISC OS confirmed and having read through its contents, we wondered why we bothered. 4 comments, latest by bucksboy on 22/12/08 1:58PM. South East show organisers in hunt for new venue This year's South East RISC OS show was the last to be held at the Guildford Technical College, reports Martin Hansen. The organisers, SASAUG, struggled to fill the hall last month after a few regular exhibitors pulled out, forcing show officials to look for a new venue for next year's affair. The group have used the college's campus since 2002, which marked the launch of the Castle Iyonix. Discuss this. Published: 17 Nov 2008
