On Moving tributes to Paul Vigay flood in:

Just seen this news - to say I'm shocked is an understatement.

Paul was a lovely chap and will be sadly missed. My thoughts go out to his family.

Very sad news indeed.

That is fantastic! I never thought Blu-Ray would be tackled by RISC OS.

That really is a landmark achievement - Well Done Steffen.

On Archive ed Paul quits magazine:

Many thanks for your work on Archive Paul - I didn't subscribe but always bought copies at the Wakefield show - and the Archive CDs.

How about a special CD - The Beverley Years!

And Jim sound like a perfert choice - I too always enjoyed his regular pages in Computer Shopper.

Best wishes to you both, Dave C.

On Wakefield 2007 live news and photos:

nijinsky - For years the Wakefield show has clashed with the Cup Final - although of course it was often a two day event.

Couldn't really make it this year.

Checked on Drobe to keep imformed.

On New user guide for RISC OS 6 as release nears:

AW- Well the power supply died - but I did have a spare I'd bought from the Wakefield Charity shop the year before. But then the harddisc - a SCSI 4 Gig - seemed to have died as well.

It was an early Castle SCSI Risc PC so I'd had a good twelve years or so out of it.

I still have a A3010 and an A4 up in the loft - but the only 'Acorn' use I get now is with Virtual RiscPC.

On New user guide for RISC OS 6 as release nears:

Well I'm with Druck on all this.

I subscribed to Select for a couple of years - then lapsed as nothing was coming - and then rejoined when it looked like things were going to happen.

In that last year I got nothing - although because of the extension I did finally get a Beta product.

At Wakefield last year I nearly bought a A9Home after some young chap demonstrated it at the show (Daniel? I think) - as the A9Home had been announced a full year earlier - but it wasn't being sold as a finished product.

This year I will go to Wakefield again - but two years on a 400 MHz computer doesn't look worth 600 quid.

The Iyonix - again no - but I might be interested if there is a a new machine.

It looks very much as if Virtual-RPC-SE will be my only involvement since my StrongArm machine died last year.

I don't know what the answer is but you can't blame people for not handing over good money time and again without appearing to see much for it.

Sad - but not something one should have to apologise for - Dave C.

On Wakefield 2007 to take place in May:

That's great news!

A pity about the lack of Theatre talks but I can understand why.

Looking forward to it already.

On South West show set for this Saturday:

Hope they have a great show - but too far for me to travel.

As to Wakefield - I've gone to nearly everyone and it's always been worth the trip.

Please try to put on at least a one day show - after all there's unsually only some little football game on that weekend.

Cheers, Dave C.

On RISC OS 4 caught on Mac OS X:

Would it be possible to have a 'Live' version of an emulator - that way RISCOS higher than 3.11 could be used as no copy would be written to the host PC?

On Select 4 will not be ready until new year:

I have to agree.

I've been in Select - then dropped out - then re-joined - and am probably now lapsed.

I understand that the original 'up to three updates a year' was optimistic but many of us have paid in good faith and have little to show for it in the last twelve months.

I really want Risc OS to move forward - and I DO think Select have improved and upgraded the OS -but I do think Select members have little to show for their support recently.

I can't see me re-joining unless I buy new hardware in the coming twelve months.

At the moment I'm trying a number of Linux options on my Windows PC. - Mandriva, Ubuntu 5.10 and Suse 10.0.

As a sad footnote at a recent Computer Show in Manchester (Northern Computer Fair) the Tiny recievers were selling off alsorts of stock - including Bush Internet Boxes (RiscOS powered) for 2UKPs each! (I bought one)

If I do buy a new machine soon it might be a MacMini rather than RiscOS option. And that's from someone who bought a BBBC 'B' machine when they first came out and who watched Ian McNought Davis on the BBC Micro Show in the early Eighties.

I now mainly run Virtual RPC - and then mainly to use !Compo

On No plans to change USB 1.1 in A9home:

In Reply to nutfetishist:- The DVD player I used is the my old one in the bedroom - Logix 3000 - but I've just tried it in my main machine - JVC XY-N212 - trying different scenes the lowest bitrate I got was 4.1 and the highest 8.8Mbs. Most of my DVDs are packed up as I'm moving house soon. One DVD out - a cheap DVD from the Post Office - but a good film 'By the Sword' which is 4:3 aspect - goes down to 3.2 and up to about 7.2 Cheers, DaveC

On No plans to change USB 1.1 in A9home:

The DVD in my machine at the moment is 'The Man Who Would be King' Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

On the busy market scene - Scene 4 - the rite rate is varying between 4 and 8 Mbs and is mostly bewteen 5.6 and 6.5 MBs.

On No plans to change USB 1.1 in A9home:

DVD Movie data rates are mostly between 4 and 6 Mbs. 10Mbs is the maximum for MPEG2 data. In fact some DVDs I have are coded at an average of only 4Mbs. Even the Superbit DVD are mainly coded at 6 to 7 Mbs. Only now are some of the Harddisc/DVD writer Personal Video Recorders offering recording at 10Mbs - although I belive one (Sony I think) has a 15Mb superbit rate.
