On Virtual License:

The price of VRPC makes the price of the Alpha seem a little more reasonable now.

Presumably, if the price difference between VA5000 and VRPC is not all accounted for by the cost of the RO4 licence, either VRPC is more complex than VA5000, or it has more support, or VA5000 was a loss leader (it did seem very cheap!)

On Future ARM based processors for RISC OS?:

"The one thing they do have in common is that they were both used in the first RISC Desktop PC."

So it was said!

On On with the show:

I do think that RISC OS needs a new name. The present one conveys nothing to people outside the RISC OS world and, as has been pointed out, the name Acorn puts a lot of people in mind of the BBC Micro.

(When I went for a job interview in 1993, I mentioned my computing activities and the interviewer said that he didn't realise that Acorn still made computers.)

We've heard about how Castle, with Tematic, would like to use RISC OS in consumer electronics. The operating system needs a brand name which conveys to the average person more of what it is and does and is, preferably, a little easier to say than RISC OS.

Does anybody have any ideas?

On Castle buys RISC OS from Pace:

"... it suddenly feels like 1994 again ..."

You mean because Apple have just launched a new generation of computer?

(Only kidding!)

On The Press sucks says MicroDigital:

"I was also there and can confirm the general tenor of the presentation from DA."

As Castle's HAL might say, "I don't think this is right, Dave".

"You rumour-tease!"

That must be because I suffer from "rumour-toid" arthritis!

On The Press sucks says MicroDigital:

I had a strange exchange of emails with DA following my submission to him of my report on his Wakefield talk for Foundation RISC User (not yet published). I just sent it to him out of courtesy so that he could check it for accuracy and omissions.

The exchange was private, though, and not for publication.

On Netsurf examined:

I hope it has scroll bars on frames.

One of my pet dislikes of Oregano is that frames can only be scrolled by dragging their contents. Apart from needing a lot more mouse movement, there is no indication of how far down a frame you are, which is a nuisance when you are reading something long.

On Business and RISC OS:

"One factor which will probably win it is not the actual machines, but the add ons. Whoever gets DVD-RAM, USB Cameras and proper PCI support (as well as AGP video cards!) first will be the winner."

Much has been said about Castle and RO Ltd. talking to each other and there are hints that it's now happening.

It would seem to be in the best interests of both of them.

People are buying Iyonix pcs, representing potential loss of Select subscriptions to RO Ltd. unless Select can be merged with RO 5.

Castle now, it seems, have competition from the Omega which can be seen as a more "mainstream" machine, capable of running Select and using all the goodies now coming out for the Simtec USB card. There is a danger of the Iyonix being seen as a "non-standard" machine by comparison.

It's clearly in everybody's interests to talk to each other and make RISC OS once again a single standard.

On RISC OS Select 3 in detail:

re. Selection of text in writable icons:

I only managed to have a quick play with Select at the end of the show (while they were asking non-exhibitors to leave the hall!) and could not find any way of configuring the way it behaves. Certainly, it didn't clear the selected text when I typed new text.

Perhaps all will become clear when we get it.

Does anybody know WHEN we get these goodies?

See you all at Wakefield.

On RISC OS Select 3 in detail:

IClear does indeed select and invert the whole icon. This was the only way I've been able to come up with for safely doing something which basically interferes with another application.

As I said, I thought that the OS should be able to do the job so much better. Clearly now it does.

On RISC OS Select 3 in detail:

I would like to be able to double-click on a writ(e)able icon, or select the text in some other way, and replace the selected text simply by typing in new text. Can I do that yet, or will I have to delete the old text first?

It was to do this sort of thing that I wrote the IClear module almost ten years ago. I've been pressing since then for the Window Manager to take over this function and render IClear obsolete, because the Window Manager could do the job so much better.

It finally seems to have happened!

Re. two versions of RISC OS

Castle, Microdigital, RISCOS Ltd. and Simtec are all giving talks at Wakefield.

There are bound to be questions asked about compatibility in OS versions and USB interfaces.

On What are RiscStation playing at?:

It wasn't meant to be shouting but eye-catching.

RiscStation seem to think that the publicity on Drobe may have damaged something that they're engaged in, such as negotiation with someone who might be able to help them produce a machine. That suggests that whoever it is will have seen Drobe. Just on the off-chance that some such person will have read down this far, I thought that my posting might help.

On What are RiscStation playing at?:

An IMPORTANT MESSAGE to anyone in negotiation with RiscStation:

Please don't be put off by all the ranting you've seen here.

A lot of people paid deposits or full amounts for a laptop, some as long as 16 months ago. The fact that many of them are still hanging on demonstrates that there is considerable demand for a RISC OS laptop, and nobody else looks like producing one.

If you do a deal with RiscStation to produce a laptop, IT WILL SELL !
