On Iyonix-only Firefox 2 port released online:

Basically Jwoody is trying to say is that it's been 2 1/2 years from when ChoX11 was released until FF2 was released. Which, to be fair, is probably correct.

Personally I'm impressed that people still have the inclination to produce these things and I can't belive that anyone would want to see anything other than positives.

I think the money Peter has collected speaks louder than any half baked criticism, but I thought I'd still pitch in as someone who doesn't really use RISC OS any more, but still an interest in the platform.

Keep it up!

On TEK 1608 in 32bit rumour:

I gave up and sold my copy because I couldn't finish it. From memory, it just crashed every time I finished it.

Just one line, to back up Richard. Well written, and a good point.

On Best of 2005 awards voting open:

Well since it claims I've already voted, I'll just register my vote for you here. Certainly for me, firefox working on my iyonix is the most obvious success, but I trust all of the behind the scenes work is equally impressive.

On Using an A3010 as a central heating controller:

Martin: you feel more comfortable knowing that you're saving energy and always going to be warm :)

Where did you get this controller, and what make/model is it?

On Using an A3010 as a central heating controller:

Yes, I've often thought central heating systems don't leave enough control. One enhancmenet I would suggest would be you to say you want it to be 20 degrees in the house when you wake up, and it will turn on the heating far enough in advance by measuring the temperature overnight. How many times have you had the heating coming on half an hour before you get up, and then on one really cold day that isn't enough time to get it warm?

On Sweep articles under the carpet?:

Drobe has always (for a long time anyway) had that policy and the only way to get it changed would be to get out your lawyers (and even then it's not guaranteed).

On RISC OS 4.39 and 4.02 pricings confirmed:

Seems RO4.39 will be on flash roms, see ROL's web site news section. It doesn't mention timing problems, I wonder if they are new compared with the ones used for RISC OS 4 orignally.

On RISC OS 4.39 and 4.02 pricings confirmed:

Well the lingering impression in my mind (left at that time by the news articles published around then) hadn't been contradicted until now as far as I could see. My original comment just said that's what I (still) thought, I was wondering if it was just my impression. I certainly didn't expect such a thorough lambasting how stupid I am to even think that!

On RISC OS 4.39 and 4.02 pricings confirmed:

Why is oregano so useless at pasting into text boxes, half the time it removes what you've typed and replaces the entire page with what you wanted to paste. Grr.

imj> [link] Chris Williams says so. "Select 4 [may] be available asa physical ROM version...[etc]"

On RISC OS 4.39 and 4.02 pricings confirmed:

Ah, the talk aboit "select on rom" was actually about Select 4, not 3. One solution would be to buy the ROMs then stop subscribing to select. Only problem is, they'll probably add some great features to select 4 that I didn't know about :)

On Castle confident in Scotland:

I'm typing into a textarea right now. As I understand, they were originally written for either Java or Browse (or both) They are alright in general, but they get very slow on slow machines or if someone puts a huge EULA in them.

However, that sounds more rude than intended so let's just remember it's the season of goodwill and I'll reduce the above reply to, "I stand by my comment". Oh, and merry Christmas too! ;)

On Again with the laptops:

Chocky: I didn't quote, I paraphrased, and the bit which was in contention I made it clear. I find what I said quite hard to misinterpret in any inappropriate way that's liable to cause speculation. I stand by my original posting, perhaps you should have just posted a link and a small correction rather than making out that my comment is inappropriate.

On Again with the laptops:

mrchocky: well I can't remember exactly who said it, I was going to post the link, but I searched with google for about 5 minutes with no luck. If you do have the link (I don't know where it's readily available from, I can't even remember how I came across it) then it'd be nice if you could post it. Thanks!

On Again with the laptops:

adrianl: about 6 months ago in an interview someone relevent at Intel said that they could produce a 2GHz ARM tomorrow/next week (or something) but there wouldn't be a market for it, since the intended market want low power, not super fast above all else.

On Please Stop the Madness:

Chocky: of course, but it'd be pretty unrewarding running a news site if you never got any feedback, you'd never get any praise either. You're surely doing your best, but as a result of feedback you can make your best even better. I know I've seen a lot of developers complain that no-one ever tells them what they think of their software even though they have had n thousand downloads. Perhaps (should we?) we should be plased that everyone is so free with their opinions on things on drobe? I know that drobe gets plenty of positive feedback as well, in the comments, so it's not all one sided negativity.

On Please Stop the Madness:

If the email had just been fabricated and such had been specified then everyone would have been chortling away happily. I do think it's improved the quantity of contributions to drobe though which is always good. A more natural (/intuitive or whatever the word) policy on email would be anything is publishable unless otherwise specified but every effort will be made to contact the sender to let them know beforehand and allow them to add the "not to be published" tag afterwards. It's considered bad practice to publish private emails without permission on newsgroups and mailing lists, and with good reason. Anyway, back to work!

On RISCOS Ltd. AGM:

And NB that isn't my attitude to this forum, it was akin to the "how to write code" guides that say call your variables silly names so that no-one else can maintain your program! Makes peple think how ludicrous it is but people do do it.

On RISCOS Ltd. AGM:

David H: notice the smiley! I'm just trying to point out in an original way that people are posting anything and not checking what factual there is in it. Where there are five times as many people saying "castle should buy ROL" then saying "what do you know?" history has proven that people don't pay any attention because this silly saying what companies should do still happens. Fortunately drobe's article is quite helpful, just so long as you don't decide to read the comments ;)

On RISCOS Ltd. AGM:

Dave H: Well after so much sarcasm I thought I should join in :) It was just as much assumption as that by getting RO they'd get the shares. Admittedly, I did intend the "AFAIK" to apply to the whole sentence, not the "didn't buy" bit. Anyway, who cares what anyone writes here, it takes 30 seconds to rattle off a badly thought out reply and post it to the world without any proofreading. Then, next week, no-one will even remember that I wrote this. Why should I bother to say anything sensible. At the risk of appearing sarcastic and annoying I'll leave it there ;)

On RISCOS Ltd. AGM:

Sorry, it was *extreme* sarcasm about most of RO in C, it isn't especially clear. The point I was trying to make is that who on earth do people like myself think we are saying what businesses should and shouldn't do? That's up to them, we either buy their product or we don't.

Oh, and AFAIK Castle didn't buy Pace, so they don't own the share in ROL, some of the stuff people write here is just funny (or scary)
