On The web in 2009: Your thoughts:

IMHO the web is (or should be) a source of information. But there is a problem: it becomes more and more difficult to find some information. Search engines haven't really improved: I want to find the information that I am searching for. I don't care what the majority of people are looking for. And if something can't be found, I want to be told so instead of getting lots of false search results.

Every innovation is certainly not an improvement: e.g. flash websites. Information that is in such websites cannot be found with search robots such as Altavista.

That's probably why there is no RO Select for the Iyonix (yet).

On Could open source RISC OS bring back users?:

ajb: "I remember Paul Middleton stating that he was not going to produce a 32bit OS, as nobody wanted one, when at the time a requirement for 32bit was one of the main topics of discussion."

Nobody wanted one? IIRC nobody wanted (or was able to) to pay for it.

On R-Comp email software to fight spam:

:arawnsley

I have some problems with fetching mail with POPstar because the pop3 server returns some unexpected errors from time to time (IIRC 'system unavailable' and 'message not available'). Does Hermes handle this better? (ATM I have to restart fetching more than once because of those problems with the pop3 server).

On Plan to save users' marriages shelved:

In reply to SimonC:

The UCS font manager of RO5 is not perfect, but at least it works. Support for foreign languages could be made available for RO4 (and perhaps even RO3.7) users right now. AFAIK the UCS font manager (and extra keyboard drivers) are not tied to RO5. But I'm afraid ROL doesn't really care. :-(

On Plan to save users' marriages shelved:

In reply to SimonC:

Unicode support could have been available if only ROL and Castle could agree on the use of the unicode compatible font manager (RO5) in RO4 (and Select and perhaps even RO3.7).

On Archive booklets review part two:

In the latest version of Zap (1.47) it is possible to select a different encoding (e.g. latin5 or utf8 instead of latin1). AFAIK this isn't possible yet in SE: are there any plans to add this?

BTW: I haven't found out yet how to change the current font. I guess it is possible...

On South East 2005 show report:

In reply to nx; 'I firmly believe the move the OS to 32-bit is something that had to be done sooner rather than later.'

Right. But there was already a 32 bit version of RISC OS (RO5). IMHO it is a pity there hasn't been more cooperation (as announced last year). I am aware that merging RO4 and RO5 is probably quite some task, but I wish they had at least started with it instead of continuing working on their own. I guess it has something to do with NIH (i.e. they both think they can do it better).

BTW: I wonder when they will reach an agreement over the UCS (Universal Character Set) font manager. I don't see any (technical) reason why it couldn't be made available to e.g. Select subscribers and/or A9 users (perhaps even Omega users).
